The Acting Chief State Prosecutor participates at the International Conference "Strengthening Accountability - Efforts to empowerment against corruption in the Western Balkans"

 

Tirana, March 5, 2024 – The Acting Chief State Prosecutor, Mr. Besim Kelmendi, has participated in the International Conference “Strengthening Accountability: Empowering efforts against corruption in the Western Balkans”, held in Tirana and organized by the Global Initiative against International Organized Crime, the Minister of State for Public Administration and Anti-Corruption and the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Albania.

During his address at this Conference, Acting Chief Prosecutor Kelmendi spoke to the audience about a number of positive steps taken by the State Prosecutor’s Office in the fight against corruption and organized crime in recent years, the proactive approach of prosecutors in freezing and seizing assets, where he emphasized that only during the past year, more than 111 million euros of assets were frozen, seized and confiscated, in regards to the establishment of the Office for Asset Recovery and cooperation with other countries in the recovery of assets acquired through criminal acts, as well as the creation of a database for criminal investigations on the intelligent data, this platform will create opportunities for verifying the wealth of each citizen of the Republic of Kosovo.

The Acting Chief State Prosecutor also spoke about the role and function of whistleblowers in public institutions in reporting corruption and legal violations, the implementation of the law on the disciplinary responsibility of judges and prosecutors as an effective mechanism to prevent and combat negative phenomena, the use of the Cases Management Information Technology System of (CMIS), as a system which has advanced the work of prosecutors, as well as cooperation with civil society in defense of the values of institutional independence and strengthening the rule of law.

In the International Conference “Strengthening Accountability: Empowering efforts against corruption in the Western Balkans”, representatives of criminal justice institutions and law enforcement agencies from the countries of the Western Balkans, government institutions, representatives of international and regional organizations, the academic world, society participated civil society, the media, etc., where they discussed issues of progress and common challenges related to strengthening accountability, the culture of integrity in public institutions and the fight against corruption and organized crime.
